In short, when you are an expert, you can use more intuition than analysis, especially when time is a limiting factor. If you are not an expert yet, do more in-depth analysis, deliberate practice and at the same time, hone your intuition.
The practical answer is that regardless of skill levels, all players go in with their game plans and when those plans clash, the game becomes complex and chaotic. The players act according to their plan and, when things happened outside their plan, react based on their experience and intuition.
